Richard Clare

Richard was born in 1964 and brought up in Sheffield, Yorkshire.  He trained as a graphic designer, which encouraged the development of his art. He is known for his colourful depictions of Northern landscapes, as well as scenes of France and Italy. His paintings are developed from sketches, photographic reference and memory. In recent years, urban landscapes, particularly at night time, have become a fascination.

Richard is colour blind, but insists that it has never caused him any problems as he is more interested in capturing the “spirit of a landscape” than reproducing it.

A keen walker, Richard has always gathered his inspiration in the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District; occasionally making a quick sketch, but generally absorbing the atmosphere before laying it onto a canvas with a palette knife in a riot of acrylic hues.

These days Richard is also inspired by the French and Italian landscapes, so much so that he has bought a home in Tuscany enabling him to spend more time there.  However, he still spends a lot of time at his studio in England, where he is painting to meet the demand for his work.

Richard admits to enjoying the contrast between the technical exactness against the freedom he allows himself in his painting.

He has a Diploma in Graphic Design and Higher National Diploma in Visual Communications.
